As a Spinnaker Consulting Group Advisor, Melani Alcaino brings 20 years of experience within the financial services industry with a focus on operational risk and internal audit. Throughout her career, Melani’s analytical acumen, innate curiosity, and willingness to learn has enabled her to understand operational processes. As a result, she has guided institutions in effectively identifying and mitigating risks, provided guidance in successfully remediating regulatory, external and internal audit findings, and both discovered opportunities for and implemented process efficiencies and improvements. Her strong interpersonal skills and desire to build relationships have enabled Melani to effectively communicate and collaborate with all levels of management, regulators, external auditors and teammates.
Prior to joining Spinnaker, Melani worked for Fortune 500 financial services companies where she facilitated the creation of risk control self assessments (RCSAs) for all departments within the wealth management, risk management, finance, and accounting divisions. These RCSAs were utilized during a large merger to ensure key risks remained mitigated and led to the identification of numerous significant general ledger accounts that lacked assignment of responsibility. Melani worked with management to ensure proper assignment and reconciliations. Melani’s experience also includes: due diligence audits of acquisition candidates, root cause analysis of large operational losses and assistance in creating remediation plans, system conversions and upgrades, vendor management reviews, Sarbanes-Oxley Act compliance as well as inspections prior to regulatory examinations resulting in favorable reviews.
Melani is a graduate of Troy State University (now named Troy University), with a B.S. in Finance. During her financial services tenure, she obtained the Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Bank Auditor designations and served as President of the Birmingham Chapter of the Institute of Internal Auditors. Melani resides in Tupelo, Mississippi with her husband and maltipoo. She enjoys playing tennis, traveling, attending concerts, learning to quilt and spending time with her friends and family.
